Workshop on the Ecology, Management and Control of False Brome in the Willamette Valley
On March 11th, 2011 Integrated Resource Management joined several sponsors to conduct a workshop at the Corvallis Public Library and local restoration sites. The key item of discussion was the various management issues stemming from the invasive species false brome.
The morning session included speakers from the Siuslaw National Forest, Institute for Applied Ecology, Applegate Forestry, and private landowners. Topics included were the history and ecology of the species, the current extent of the problem, and management techniques being used to combat false brome.
The afternoon session included a field trip to view local populations of false brome and see the results of two control projects that have proved to be successful. Integrated Resource Management’s Restoration Forester, Matt Mellenthin along with Debbie Johnson of Applegate Forestry presented the results of a false brome control project that was completed on the Oregon State University’s McDonald-Dunn Forest in 2009. The discussed project consisted of 245 acres of moderate to densely infested false brome in the Soap Creek area of the McDonald-Dunn Forest that was treated with herbicides by a labor crew. Mellenthin and Johnson discussed the management strategies, cost, and production rates of the project to a group of about 50 participants.
The final stop of the field trip was used to view and discuss a false brome control project being conducted by a local landowner without the use of herbicides.
