Timber sale layout and designIn the winter of 2012, IRM was hired by both companies to layout harvest units near Bingen Washington.  The work included the following:  Boundary tagging,  Riparian Reserve Tagging, Road layout, and GPS mapping.  IRM field crews used GNSS capable GPS receivers, to map the harvest boundaries, RMZs, and leave trees in ArcPad 10.

IRM has extensive experience with harvest unit layout, and is thoroughly knowledgeable of forest practice regulations in both  Oregon and Washington,  as well as on the east and west sides of the Cascades

IRM successfully completed the work on schedule, in highly adverse conditions — deep snow and severe wind throw and breakage.

Bull Run Land Exchange

Bull Run Land Exchange
IRM conducted stand typing, and designed and implemented  a timber cruise as part of a stumpage appraisal for a land exchange between the USFS and the City of Portland in the Bull Run Watershed.  The exchanged involved the cruising of almost 5000 acres of old growth forest.  IRM’s most experienced timber cruisers, Marcus Koops and Tim Mace, completed all of the field work.  The cruise used the following sampling design.

  • Variable Plot Sampling
  • Variable Log Length Cruising
  • Export Sorts
  • Domestic Grades

This past summer IRM assisted Portland Metro in designing and implementing a large scale restoration project on a recently acquired piece of property known as Scouter’s Mountain, near Happy Valley, Oregon. IRM began the restoration process on 35 acres of land that had been severally infested by English hawthorn and invasive fruit trees. IRM’s Lightfoot™ was utilized to masticate the invasive trees.IRM supervised a 20 man restoration crew hired to cut, pile and loop-scatter the plant material to create open spaces for the planting of native plants. The stumps of all invasive trees were treated with herbicide to ensure that they didn’t re-sprout.  IRM is planning a follow up treatment during the summer of 2013 to treat the seedlings. Siuslaw National Forest — Multi Party Monitoring Report

Cascade Pacific RC&D

Since 2008 IRM has worked with Cascade Pacific RC&D, the Siuslaw National Forest Service (SNF) and the associated stewardship collaborative groups to develop and implement monitoring procedures to track stewardship contracting related activities on the forest.

IRM is responsible for organizing the stewardship data into a Microsoft access database, conducting field trips with stakeholders, installing photo point and stand exam plots and preparing a summary report detailing each fiscal year accomplishments.

Stand Visualization Imagery was used in the 2012 Annual Report to illustrate various silvicultural pathways for stand thinning on the SNF.  For more information regarding this project, contact us.

California Registered Professional Forester

In the late 1990s, Marc Barnes, owner of Integrated Resource Management (IRM) obtained his California Registered Professional Forester (RPF) license.  To be able to complete any forest related work within the State of California, a person must be supervised by a RPF.

A RPF is a person licensed by the State of California to perform professional services that requires the application of forestry principles and techniques to assist in the management of forested landscapes.  To become a RPF, an individual must have seven years of experience in forestry work.  RPFs are required to take a comprehensive exam demonstrating an understanding of forest growth, development and regeneration, soils, geology and hydrology, wildlife and fisheries and other forest resources.

By having a RPF on staff, IRM is able to provide assistance to landowners large and small throughout California.  The following are a few of the services that we are able to provide as a RFP:

  • Preparing forest management plans;
  • Preparing and maintaining forest inventories;
  • Assisting in forestland appraisals;
  • Preparing timber harvest plans and contract administration;
  • And any other assistance a landowner may need.

In August 2011, Marc Barnes was awarded the Two Chiefs’ Partnership Award for his contribution to the success of the Collaborative Coastal Whole Watershed Restoration in 2010.

The Two Chiefs’ Partnership award is a national award that is presented annually by the Chiefs of the USDA Forest Service and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services to recognize exemplary partnership efforts promoting conservation and forest stewardship.

According to Kent Connaughton, the PNW Regional Forester, this award is only presented to a handful of partnerships each year.  Marc was awarded this honor for his participation with the Siuslaw Stewardship Groups and their stewardship projects.

Invasive Weeds: Early Detection Rapid Response

For the past several years, Integrated Resource Management (IRM) has assisted various organizations in a program to detect and monitor invasive weeds.  This program is called Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR).  EDRR is a method of noxious weed control that identifies and treats problem weeds in their early stages of infestation in order to minimize ecological damages and minimize costs.

This year IRM and our Restoration Team completed the following EDRR projects:

  • Marion Soil and Water Conservation District – Invasive Weed Inventory
    • A little over 17 miles of stream near Mt. Angel, OR was inventoried for the possible presence of 23 invasive weed species.
    • Data collected included spatial reference (using GIS Geodatabases), species, infestation density, growth stages, photo documentation, and substrate occupied.
    • IRM identified 2 invasive weed species previously undocumented in the area and collected GIS data of another fairly common noxious weed.
    • The plants identified will be targeted in 2012 for treatment.

  • Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council – Invasive Weed Control
    • IRM assisted in the Rapid Response portion of the EDRR program of the Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council.
    • Areas previously inventoried for invasive weeds were treated.  Species treated included Japanese Knotweed and False Brome.
  • Santiam Watershed Council – Invasive Weed Inventory and Control
    • IRM was contracted in 2010 to assist in the Early Detection portion of the Santiam Watershed Council’s EDRR program.
    • In 2011, IRM completed treatment of locations that were identified as areas of concern last year, finishing the Rapid Response portion of the project.  IRM also collected new GIS data for invasive weeds that need to be treated in 2012.
